University Alliance: Enterprise Stars

University Alliance is searching for the Enterprise Stars of tomorrow.

We are holding a celebration of the emerging business talent among our students at the University of Salford at its MediaCityUK campus.

Enterprise Stars will culminate in the opportunity to win investment from a panel of investors. The festival also includes opportunities for networking, mentoring, showcasing ideas and advice and support on how to convert a great business idea into reality.

How to Enter?

Please produce:

  • A two minute video outlining your business idea and its purpose. (50%)
  • A simplified Business Model Canvas (50%) 

Then send to the Enterprise department by Wednesday 11 April

All entries will then be assessed a winner to represent Kingston University in the final will be chosen.

What are the key deadlines and dates?

  • Wednesday 11 April – Deadline for students application to the Kingston Enterprise Department 
  • Monday 16 April – Deadline for Universities to send entrant to University Alliance
  • Thursday 14 June – Enterprise Stars Final at the University of Salford, MediaCityUK

What happens in the final?

A one-day enterprise festival will be hosted by Salford University at MediaCityUK on Thursday 14 June 2018, culminating in the opportunity for students to win investment and business advice from a panel of investors.

The day will consist of:

  • Morning networking and learning
  • A chance to prep and fine-tune pitches
  • Afternoon pitching session
  • Feedback and celebration

2018 Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Awards

The Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Awards 2018 is one of the UK’s largest student and graduate business pitching competitions. Students can win £25,000 funding to kick start their business!

Why should you enter?

Of course the money is a great incentive, but the prize offers much more than that including invaluable mentoring from business experts, interns and an accelerator week!

Who should enter?

If you have a business, or are in the development stages of a business, and are a current student or recent graduate, you are probably eligible to enter this competition.  Full terms of eligibility are provided in the information pack, downloadable here.

What are the competition categories?

  • Technology business – defined as a business or idea with hardware and/or software central to the business value proposition.
  • Non-technology business – defined as a business or idea that has a value proposition that is not primarily based around hardware and/or software.

Kingston University will select one entry per category to represent them. 

What could you win?

There is a grand prize of £25,000 equity-free seed funding and a runner’s up prize of £15,000 for each of the categories.

All four winners will also receive:

  • Mentoring from business experts
  • Access to the Accelerator Week
  • A fully funded intern
  • £500 digital growth voucher from Talent Cupboard

Additionally the Santander judges will be looking out for the entry with the most positive social, community or environmental impact throughout the competition.  The successful entry will receive £7,500 of equity-free seed funding, access to the accelerator week and a fully funded intern.

How does the competition work?

Students will need to send their entries to the Kingston University Enterprise department and Kingston University will decide on two winners to fit the categories mentioned above.  The two winners of this stage will be put forward into a Regional Heat, and if you are successful at that stage, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in an Accelerator Week which will prepare you for the Nation Finals.

Can I enter the competition directly?

No.  Entries must be submitted to Santander Universities via the Enterprise Team.

What’s the deadline?

Students will need to submit their applications by Wednesday 11 April midday to be considered to represent Kingston University.

Please note the information pack gives a different deadline for universities to submit their finalists as 24-27 April – This is the universities deadline NOT your deadline.

University Alliance is pleased to announce Innovating Future Business – an enterprise competition encouraging innovative, forward-thinking business ideas, open to current and former students of participating institutions across the University Alliance group.

What is Innovating Future Business 2017?

An enterprise competition for students and graduates of Alliance universities, in collaboration with the University of SalfordANS GroupCariocca EnterprisesMarketing SignalsWakelet, and Web Applications UK.

The competition includes multiple investors, with a prize pool of £5,000 entrants will pitch their ideas to a panel of judges at the Innovating Future Business 2017 final on Wednesday 10 May 2017, hosted by the University of Salford at MediaCityUK. There will be a single winner, but all entrants will have the opportunity to get advice and feedback on their ideas from the judges.

The investors will be looking for a proposal for a business or start-up product or service that demonstrates a viable business with a low cost of entry, evidence of sound market research, and crucially an innovative idea with a ‘wow’ factor.

Who can participate?

The competition is open to students and graduates in all subject areas – entrants don’t need to be studying a business-specific field but should have a good understanding of the specialisms needed to get their idea off the ground. Entrants are encouraged to view their business idea as the ‘real thing’ and not a theoretical idea. The personality of the founder/co-founders is also an integral part of the final decision – this is something that will come through during the pitch.

Each university participating in this years’ competition will select their entry to pitch at the Innovating Future Business 2017 final.

How to enter:

Entrants will be selected by participating universities by Friday24 March2017 and will be asked to complete a short entry form to introduce themselves and their business idea ahead of the final. To enter, you must provide a proposal for investment in a start-up or business idea, product or service. Throughout the competition, all concepts pitched will remain the Intellectual Property of the respective competitors.

The Innovating Future Business final takes place on Wednesday 10 May 2017 at MediaCityUK in Salford. The finalists will have a five-minute slot to pitch their idea, after which time they will answer questions posed to them by the investors, university staff and other industry experts.

SANTANDER UNIVERSITIES ENTREPRENEURSHIP AWARDS

Since 2011, Santander has held an annual business pitching competition called the Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Awards. The award gives a financial boost to student and graduate business ventures in their early stages from our UK partner universities.

Participants can win cash prizes, mentoring and start-up support and since the competition's launch, Santander have given away more than £260,000 to start-ups and small businesses.

The 2017 edition of the awards is now live, and businesses can compete for a share of the £82,000 prize money as well as access to a range of other prizes designed to support and help grow their business.

 2017 CATEGORIES

  1. Pre-revenue category: This is defined as a business focusing on ideation, discovery and business validation with minimal sales generated (if any)
  2. Post-revenue category: This is defined as a business focusing on efficiency and scale with regular sales being generated

STAGES OF THE COMPETITION 

1st Round:

Send your entry to Mae Henderson by 17th March 2017. Winners will be announced at the Celebrate Enterprise Event on the 23rd March 2017.

Kingston University will send entries to Santander between 24th – 28th April.

2nd Round: Taking place in 26th-30th June 2017

Present your business in a 5 minute pitch to a panel at one of the three regional heats.

12 businesses then go through to the third round securing £1000 funding

3rd Round: The 12 finalist businesses go on a accelerator week (10th-15th July), expenses paid for by Santander. This encompasses a series of masterclasses and workshop preparing you for the final pitch in October 2017.

The pitch will be 10 minutes followed by 5 mins Q&A and will take place in London where the winner and runner up will be chosen.

  • A fully funded intern.

Post-revenue winner

  •  £25,000 of equity-free seed funding
  • Mentoring from one of the judges at the national final
  • Five free listings on the Talent Cupboard marketplace (Provided by Talent Cupboard)
  • Digital growth mentoring session (Provided by Talent Cupboard)
  • An additional support package (details to be announced in 2017)
  • A fully funded intern.

Post-revenue runner up

  • £15,000 of equity-free seed funding
  • Mentoring from one of the judges at the national final

However even if not successful you can win/gain experience at the following stage

Round 1: If unsuccessful after round 1 you are invited to the regional breakthrough event. There you’ll receive a feedback session with one of Santander’s local business managers

Round 2: If unsuccessful after round 2 you are invited to the regional breakthrough event. There you’ll receive a feedback session with one of Santander’s local business managers and a certificate for getting to this stage

Round 3: If you are not a winner or runner up you will still receive £1000 and a certificate
